The Epistle to the Ephesians, commonly known as Ephesians, is the tenth book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s most profound and spiritually rich letters. Written around AD 60–62, while Paul was under house arrest in Rome, the letter was addressed to the church in Ephesus, a major city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) known for its wealth, culture, and the great Temple of Artemis. Unlike Paul’s other letters, which often addressed specific problems, Ephesians is more general, focusing on the grand themes of God’s plan, the unity of the Church, and the believer’s new identity in Christ.

Paul begins by praising God for the spiritual blessings believers have in Christ, declaring that before the foundation of the world, God chose His people to be holy and blameless. He explains that salvation is entirely by grace, not by human effort, stating that by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. This foundational truth emphasizes that salvation is a gift, freely given by God’s love and mercy.

One of the key themes of Ephesians is the unity of all believers in Christ, both Jews and Gentiles. Paul explains that through Jesus’ death, the dividing wall of hostility between Jews and Gentiles has been broken, creating one new humanity in Christ. The Church is described as the body of Christ, where all believers are united under Jesus as the head. Paul also presents the Church as the bride of Christ, chosen and loved by God, displaying His wisdom and grace to the world.

Paul shifts from theology to practical application, urging believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling. He emphasizes humility, patience, and unity, calling Christians to walk in love, put off their old sinful nature, and live by the Spirit. He warns against anger, sexual immorality, greed, and corrupt speech, encouraging believers to forgive one another as Christ forgave them.

A central passage in Ephesians is Paul’s teaching on spiritual warfare, where he instructs believers to put on the full armor of God—the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
